Beach Cleanup for SEAWEEK

BRIGHTON BEACH CLEANUP

Sunday March 6th 10am - All welcome to come along and help out.
A group from Big Rock Boardriders will work their way along the coast towards Taieri Mouth to pick up rubbish in the car lay-bys where the freedom campers frequent.
Please meet at 10am by the Skip

A DCC contractor will deliver two really big wheelie bins to the Brighton Beach carpark at about 9am on Sunday March 6. Collected rubbish can go in the bins, or if there is a lot, it can be stacked within a 2 meter radius of the bins. This will all be taken away by the contractor at or after 1pm the same day. While we still have a central collection point at Hancock Park, St Kilda, rubbish will be going straight into a skip without sorting and weighing as the dirty rubbish cannot be recycled.

2011 Season - Surf Comp #1

Jimi got it together for another relaxed comp for the Brighton Surf Club, Big Rock Boardriders, held it on the second day of the Brighton Gala day where their main event was held on the Brighton Domain. So to keep out of the way of the hundreds of carparking visitors and foot traffic we held the event at the horse carpark at Ocean View.

Our first comp of the year was successfully run 'out front of bens place' in nice 1-2 foot waves, with Jimi Crooks making a speedy recovery from a dislocated shoulder two weeks ago, to take out the honors, with some solid turns on some slightly less solid waves, followed by Andy Sutherland in second, Hayley Coakes in third and Matt Aberdein in forth.

We are going to carry on the roll and let you all know about our second comp well in advance:

We are planning to hold it 5th of March 2011, but keep an eye on the blog for full details, as always will depend on swell forecast for the weekend.
There is likely to be a BBQ following the comp.

22nd May 2010, Big Rock Boardriders held their last ladder comp of the year. After a bit of wave scouting we settled on surfing the 2nd peak down at Blackhead. Thanks to HOTLINE wetsuits who came through with two sets of rashies. heaps of fun for the morning till it all wound up at half past twelve.

On completion of this seasons competitions, we will aim to reduce the number of competitions and focus on doing maybe 3 or 4 really well, Jimi to set dates, with the following tentatively booked in:

Winner Takes All (second weekend in January) $10 entry fee per category with winner taking the prize pot.

Also noted was next weeks pre Kaikoura comp which is to be held Saturday 22/5/2010 at 8:30am. But confirmation will be posted on the blog/ facebook on Weds/ Thurs.

Big Rock Correspondence
It was agreed the method of correspondence needed to be improved, as most members have facebook, it was agreed Nic would set up a facebook page for the club, whereby members could join and be informed of club competitions, meeting etc.

Club Fund raising
The idea of club fund raising was mooted, after much discussion the following was agreed:

The aim of the fund raising would be to cover the cost of buying/ restoring surfboards to supply young surfers and possibly some gear to get them into surfing.
Any fund raising would also go towards covering the costs of team members entry to SISA competitions, this would probably be dependent on those members participating in the fund raising efforts.

The two options for fund raising agreed on were:
Sausage Sizzles to be organised by Andy
An art raffle to be organised by Nic and Andy, tickets to be sold by all members.

Big Rock Mission Statement
It was agreed the club needed a mission statement, in order to provide some direction for the club. Possible ideas were agreed as follows:
To promote surfing in the Brighton area
To provide a safe environment for young surfers
To promote environmental sensitivity and encourage respect of our surfing environment

This is to be refined and further ideas are encourage, please either post as a comment, email to us bigrockboardriders@gmail.com or bring it along to the next meeting.

Big Rock Slogan
We will be running a competition to come up with a slogan for the club, whoever comes up with the best slogan wins free membership for a year. Something short and effective. Entries close at the next meeting.

Judging Training
At some stage in the future there will be judging training, whereby we will watch some footage on TV, while everyone scores the waves surfed. With everyone being shown what some turns should be scored, hopefully to encourage an even playing field of judges.

Earth Hour is a global WWF climate change initiative where everyone is invited to switch off their lights for one hour on March 27 at 8.30 p.m to show their support for action on climate change. People across the world from all walks of life will turn off their lights and join together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common – our planet.

Brighton Coastal Cleanup for Seaweek -14th March

Seaweek 2010 - Fish for the Future!

The 4th Annual Seaweek 'Dunedin Coastal Cleanup' is on again this year
Sunday the 14th of March 2010.
With support from the Dunedin City Council and the Department of Conservation

Jay and Nic are again organising a coastal cleanup in conjunction with the Great Dunedin Coastal Cleanup & Seaweek again with the support of Big Rock Boardriders

You are most welcome to join in with our local crew, no matter where you live.

We will be setting off into groups to clean up the Brighton Domain, Ocean View, and down along the coast towards Taieri Mouth. If there are enough people we will send a group off to Blackhead as well. Please register your support by emailing me.

Meet at: Sunday 14th March 10am meeting at the top domain at Brighton at 10am, anyone else from town is most welcome to join us

Rubbish collected will be taken to Hancock Park, St Kilda (corner Victoria Rd and John Wilson Dr) from 12.30 to 2.30pm for rubbish weighing, recycling and disposal.

Please bring: Water bottle, sturdy shoes preferably gumboots, sun hat, sun-block, raincoat, warm clothes. Rubbish bags and gloves will be supplied. We hope you can join us.

Prizes: At the weigh in, there will be prizes for most rubbish collected and strangest item found. There will be Seaweek 'Fish for the Future' displays & activities, videos, Free sausage sizzle, prize giving and Rocky Shore Guide launch!

Hancock Park Festivities start at 12.30pm, prize-giving from 3 to 3.30pm. Hosted by the Dunedin City Councils' great Dunedin Coastal Cleanup.

Stormy Spring Bling

Murphys law, organise a surf fun day, and the weather packs up. The dedicated Big Rock crew arrived at the top domain Brighton at noon to a mush-burgered out Brighton break with strong chilling winds. As I type this i just can't understand how the weather report tonight came up with Dunedin being 14 degrees?
Consensus was to move the event around the corner to back beach.
Only five went out for a surf, and due to the un-fun nature of the weather and surf it was decided to revisit the Sping Bling event in a months time when the weather had settled a bit. We did however hold a mini comp and gave out the second place cards, and will save the trophies for the next event when more people could come and take part.

As all Big Rock events do, things got a bit twisted and the Pre-Surf Rap was held at the end with some entertaining and worrying performances. This morphed into a skate session and a human speed camera test which got some local residents out of their houses and hovering at their gates to watch the show. (short film to come)

Celebrating Matariki,. the Maori New Year, our second annual mid winter comp on the day before the shortest day of the year, which was also International Surfing Day.
A good turnout gathered at Ocean View at 9am.

Next up on the events list was the Ugly Fun Board . This year, not to be outdone, in the second heat Jimi and Nathan teamed up on an old windsurf board and paddled out the back to do a tandem ride, sharing the points to go through to the finals. Below right: lucky they decided to go for this wave so they didn't get cleaned up on the set wave behind! below again, they did manage to stand up together for a second or two, although going left might have been a longer more impressive ride!? Note, Jimi with the Gath, and Nath with the straw hat.

The Open Comp was three heats with Hayley and Jean competing with the men. There was a bit of sweating and comp talk going on which pushed the surfing whch was impressive in the conditions. Great to see Matt really improving and making it to the semis.

Kaikoura Cold Water Classic 09

Jimi Crooks, Andy Sutherland, Nathan Lungley, Chris Lamb and Jono Pascoe travelled up to kaikoura for the Cold Water Classic over Queens Birthday weekend. This was the final event on the SISA circuit.

Jimi won the Junior U18 event, and by doing so won the Junior mens SISA circuit for 2009!

Perfect day for it, sun shining and nice little peelers running through Brighton
With the tide still a bit high the mals went out first, with Jono being the eventual winner
Followed by the womans, with all entrants catching quality rides, it was close until Nic caught two long rides from out the back almost to the sand, to take first place
The grommets provided a couple of big upsets, with all competitors putting in a solid effort over summer, we've seen some big improvements leading up to this event, Ollie made his intentions clear early as he showed total commitment to his wave, charging straight onto a bed of rock, scoring a few hoots and a sneaky extra point for his efforts, with the surf improving as the tide went out, Matt picked off a couple of nice bowly ones and worked them well for first place.
The open mens also provided entertainment for those watching on Barney's with Nath and Jono colliding on a wee lefty,

and Sean, somehow, sneaking in and out of a barrel, but Andy's solid backhand put him well out in front to take the event.
Finally the ugly boards went out, heaps of fun just catching a few waves on boards we wouldn't normally ride, a 4" thick single fin, a kneelo, a mal which looked more like a boat the way the bottom was shaped and a finless shorty that pretty much just spun circles, Jay was the winner on the mal with a hull.
Awesome day, hope everyone enjoyed it and we'll see you next time!

Jimi wins Juniors @ Go 4 Gold

A team from Big Rock Boardriders travelled up to Greymouth for the weekend of the 27th-028th February for the SISA rated Go for Gold comp hosted by Kahuna Boardriders.
Jimi Crooks, Andy Sutherland and Jono Pascoe.

Jimi (above) won the Juniors (under 18) and dedicated his win to the family who were involved in a head on car smash on the morning of the second day of the comp. One of the occupants who was badly injured was to surf in the same final against him later that day. The accident was caused by a tourist driving on the wrong side of the road.

Andy (above) competed in the open division, and was unfortunately knocked out in his first heat due to lack of waves his way. However, he did spend the rest of the weekend free surfing just down from the comp area, undeniably ripping and pulling into closeout barrels.

Jono (above) competed in the Open men, and the Longboard. Having been knocked out on the Mens Open, he surfed well in his longboard heat, at one stage placing second with some solid rides, but was knocked back to thrid by the end of the heat, so did not make it through.

Learner Fun day - 10th January

After two weeks of gorgeous sunshine and relatively small to flat surf.. saturday morning turned on a dull overcast sky with some funky wind and wave action.
We met at the Brighton bottom carpark outside the Brighton Surf Lifesaving clubrooms.. and while waiting engaged in an impromptu game of Hacky Sack.
A few went and checked around the corner hoping for better surf conditions, and it was decided to move the event there. Below, looking out to the new venue.

Above getting changed to go out. Well it was pretty clear after a short time that maybe the original spot was better for the new members and learners, so a slow exodus happened back to Brighton beach, where a great time was had as the conditions picked up with some unique backwash wave action in the small bay.

The surf couldn't have been crappier, but we met for a BBQ lunch at the Brighton Domain. Was the best BBQ spread ever with lots of food and some exotic tastes. With an impromptu game of soccer, with some pretty weird looking rules.

The crew went for a crusie to another beach hoping for better surf conditions, but it wasn't too promising either. Seems impromptu was the order of the day, and it was declared that the first person to change into their wetti, paddle out, and catch a wave was the 'winner' of the day.
Jay just stripped to his boardies and paddled straight out without a leggie.. and won.

For the third year in a row Tauranga Bay funneled in a massive swell which made conditions very big, rough and inconsistent.

Above and below Jimi Crooks working his heats, powering his way to his final place of second overall in the Juniors.

Above Jono, out in the first heat in the open, he was in second place to\ill about 2 mins before the end of the heat where he was knocked to third, and bumped out of the comp.

Tony Clyne from SCBRA attended the meeting to assure Big Rock members there was no animosity between the clubs and that SCBRA were keen for the clubs to work together to advance surfing in Otago and maintain open comunication between the clubs , Tony said he also would inquire regarding inter club comp/ finalize Otago Champs should Big Rock members wish to compete.

Successful Cleanup

Great turnout of Big Rock members for the Brighton Community Cleanup day. Thanks to everyone who gave up their saturday morning for a good cause.

Above, the group that turned up at 9am. Over the morning at least twice as many filtered in and set off with bags to clean up. A bunch went down the coast in a Ute to scour the lay-bys and carparks, while another stayed on the domain and Brighton beach and gave it a thorough comb over. It was unbelievable how much rubbish there was in the bushes surrounding the domain, mostly family picnic rubbish and wrappers from confectionary bought at the shop. Andy and Jimmy painted over the graffiti in the mens toilets. The text went out to all the local primary school kids that there was free sausages and drinks if you helped with the cleanup, and the place was soon buzzing with young kids doing their bit for the community (and the free sausage).

COMMUNITY CLEAN UP DAY

Saturday the 13th of September at the Brighton Domain as part of the Clean up New Zealand Week the Saddle Hill Community Board will be hosting a Community Clean Up day.

9.00am until Midday.

Please meet at the Brighton Domain Car Park

Then a BBQ will be supplied for all the volunteers who have helped with the clean up.

What to bring, yourself a friend, some warm clothes and a smile.

We will supply the gloves and rubbish bags.

Make a submission to the DCC for the installation of public toilets at the main Ocean View car park.

Posters which have been distributed so far are inaccurate, and new updated posters must be distributed.

Decided to have another club competition/ fun day on Sunday 24th Aug

Possibilities include:

Dress up, uglyboard, bit of surfing, etc.

Will make enquiries regarding picking up some gear for learners and grommets who want to get into surfing.

The Rules/ Constitution

Rules of the Big Rock Boardriders club

Name

1) The Name of the club shall be “Big Rock Boardriders Club”.

Interpretation

2) In these rules, unless a contrary intention applies “Club” means the “Big Rock Boardriders Club”. “Officers” means the officers appointed under Rule 19 of these Rules: “Year” means the financial year as referred to in Rule 28: “Special Resolution” means a resolution passed by a three quarters (3/4) majority of those present and voting at a General Meeting.

Objectives

a) To foster surfing in Otago in all its various forms.

b) To hold surfing contests including inter-club contests.

c) To encourage and support family involvement in surfing, its lifestyle, culture and values.

d) To provide a forum for encouraging the interaction between surfers of all ages.

e) To make representations to Government Departments, Local Bodies, including the Dunedin City Council and Regional Bodies, including Environment New Zealand, in order to sustain and enhance surfing venues and events.

f) To liaise, and act in conjunction with the South Island Surfing Association, fellow South Island surfing clubs and Surfing New Zealand Incorporated.

g) To make submission to the Dunedin City Council and/or other Local Government, Central Government bodies and/or any other regulatory or administrative bodies on general environmental issues. To bring appeals to the Environment Court and/or the High Court on matters and issues affecting the environment and in particular (but without limitation) environmental issues concerning water quality, discharges of effluent and contaminants into water bodies (and in particular rivers, estuarine and oceanic waters) and the preservation, safeguarding and enhancement of surfing breaks including associated shorelines, and access to the surfing breaks.

h) To bring general civil actions in any judicial or quasi judicial jurisdiction, relevant to the protection, preservation, safeguarding and enhancement of surfing breaks and access to them including civil actions to prevent the despoliation of coastal areas and oceanic water and to safeguard the health of members and their families in relation to surfing.

i) To generally adopt, follow and be guided by the precepts and principles of the Surfrider Foundation.

j) To develop facilities for attaining the objectives of the club.

k) To seek funding both in relation to the Clubs surfing focus and in relation to environmental issues that the Club decided to be involved in.

l) To affiliate with and obtain membership of the Surf Rider Foundation.

m) To lobby for political support regarding the Clubs objectives.

Membership

4) The Club shall consist of those persons now members and such other persons as shall from time to time be admitted according to the Rules in force at the time.

There shall be three classes of membership:

a) Adult membership

b) Student membership

c) Family membership

Membership classification

a) Adult Members shall be those who are 18 years of age or over at the 1^st of January whom are working or receiving a benefit

b) Student Members shall be those who are under 18 years at the 1^st January or studying full time at a tertiary institute.

c) Family membership shall be more than one individual living at the same address (two votes only, applicable).

6) Every application for membership shall be on the prescribed form and accompanied by the appropriate subscription. In the event of an application being declined by the Committee the Secretary shall return to the applicant the full amount paid.

Subscription

7) Subscriptions may be determined from year to year by a resolution of a General Meeting, but if not so determined in any year shall be that subscription from the previous Club year

Payment of Subscription

8) All subscriptions shall be payable as from the day immediately after the Annual General Meeting.

9) Any member who is unfinancial shall not be entitled to enjoy the privileges of the Club.

Expulsion

10) Any member wilfully disobeying these rules, or guilty of misconduct which in the opinion of the Club is contrary to its objectives, may be expelled by a Special Resolution at a General Meeting provided that the member is given fourteen (14) days notice of such intent.

Alteration of the Rules

11) These rules shall not be added to, altered, or rescinded except by a “Special Resolution” passed at a General Meeting, provided that not less than seven days notice shall be given to all Club members of the proposed additions, alterations, or rescissions to be brought to such meetings, provided always that accidental failure to notify any member shall not invalidate the meeting if this Rule is being substantially complied with and provided that all notices of motion of any such proposed additions, alterations, or remissions shall be in the hands of the Secretary at least fourteen (14) days prior to the date of the meeting.

General Meeting

12) The Annual General Meeting of the Club shall be held in the month of October in each year upon a date and at a time and place to be fixed by the Committee. The Annual General Meeting shall;

a) Receive audited accounts of the financial year ending 30^th September.

b) Receive from the Committee a report on the activities of the Club.

c) Elect the Officers of the Club as provided in these rules under Rule 19.

d) Decide on any resolution which may have been duly submitted in accordance with these Rules.

Notice of General Meeting

13) Notice of the date and place of any General Meeting shall be notified to all Members at least seven days before the date thereof and notice of the business to be transacted at such meetings shall be posted to members at least seven days before the date of such meetings. Accidental failure to notify and members shall not invalidate the meeting if this rule has been substantially complied with.

Special General Meeting

14) The Committee may at any time, and shall on the requisition in writing of at least ten percent (10%) of the total of Adult members, Student members and Family members (which requisition shall set out in the form of resolutions the business proposed to be transacted at such meetings), convene a Special General Meeting for any specific propose or purposes. This meeting shall not be held any more than twenty eight (28) days after the date of the receipt of the requisition by the Secretary, and if the committee does not do so within that period the members making the requisition may themselves convene a meeting.

Procedure at General Meetings

15) At all General Meetings, the chair shall be taken by the President, or if not the President, the next most senior member of the Committee present. In the absence of any Committee member, it shall be taken by a member chosen by the meeting.

16) Every Adult and Student member present shall have one vote. Every family member present shall have one vote, and limited to two votes per Family membership. In the case of equality of votes the Chairman shall have a casting vote.

17) The quorum at a General Meeting shall be ten percent (10%) of the total financial membership of the Club.

18) Voting shall be by voice, but if any member so desires, the Chairman shall call for a show of hands or by ballot if so required.

Officers

19) The executive of the Club shall consist of the President, Club Captain, Secretary, and Treasurer. The Executive shall have the power to act on behalf of the Committee where by reason of emergency, or otherwise, it is impractical for the Committee to be convened.

In addition the elected Committee shall have the power to co-opt a maximum of five (5) additional Committee members with full voting rights and who shall be Members of the Club, with the provision that any, or all, of the five so co-opted Committee members may at the option of the elected officers be removed from the Committee.

20) The President shall at some time previous to the election as President have served on the Committee. In the event of no candidate for the office of President fulfilling this requirement the Club may then elect a President who has not served on the Committee.

21) The executive and Committee shall be elected at the Annual General Meeting, but shall have the power to fill casual vacancies from member of the Club.

22) A defeated nominee for an Executive office shall be automatically eligible for election to the Committee if that person wishes.

23) Officer job descriptions shall be defined from time to time by the Committee.

Subcommittee

24) The Committee shall have the power to appoint such subcommittees as it considers necessary.

Meetings of the Club

25) A meeting of the Committee may be called at any time by the President or secretary, and shall be called within seven (7) days of the receipt by the Secretary of a requisition signed by three (3) members of the Committee.

Quorum of the Committee

26) At the meeting of the committee (4) elected Committee members shall constitute a quorum and the Chairman shall have casting vote.

Auditor

27) The Auditor shall be appointed each year by the Committee and shall not be a member of the Committee.

Finance

28) The financial year of the Club shall end on the thirtieth (30^th) day of September in each year to which date the accounts shall be balanced.

Bank Accounts

29) The Club shall have a current account at a Trading Bank and/ or Savings Bank and such other bank accounts as may be deemed necessary for the operation of the Club. These will be operated by the Treasurer alone

Accounts and Balance Sheet

30) An income and expenditure account and a balance sheet shall be prepared and audited each year and shall be presented to the Club at the Annual General Meeting.

Duties of Members

31) Every member shall notify the Secretary in writing of any change in address and all notices posted to such address shall be considered as having been duly given.

Charges

32) The Committee may make a charge to users of any Club property of privilege and to charge for any damage thereto.

Capital Expenditure

33) Any capital expenditure proposals above the amounts of $2000.00 shall be presented at a General Meeting for approval, complete with projections of benefits of the proposal.

Investment

34) All funds of the Club shall be paid into the Club’s Bank Account and any part thereof may, if the Committee so determines, be invested on fixed deposit through such Bank. Any other investments shall require the approval of the members in General Meeting.

Borrowing Powers

35) The Committee shall have the power to borrow such amounts and on such terms as it thinks fit, and to give such security as the Committee deems expedient for the repayment and interest. Winding Up

36) Upon the winding up of the Club, after payment of all its liabilities, its properties shall be disposed of in a manner provided by a Resolution passed at a General Meeting of the Club and confirmed at a further General Meeting called for that purpose not earlier than thirty (30) days after the first General Meeting of the Club, and such Resolution shall be sent to the Registrar of Incorporated Societies, provided that no distribution whether by way of monies, property, or otherwise shall be made to any member of the Club.

Matariki Tag Team Fun Comp

This Saturday 21st June 9am at the Brighton Beach Carpark.
We'll Go with the flow on the day....

Teams may consist of;
1 x Long boarder
1 x Short boarder
1 x Woman
1 x Learner 'Barney'
One surfer from each team will be the Nominated "power surfer" who's points will be doubled according to unspecified style, dress sense, maneuvers performed under peer pressure!

Each 'Heat' shall be 20 min long (or something like that)

Here are the 'rules'

a) A typical match will consist of 4 teams of 5 surfers competing over 1 set. No surfer may surf twice.
Only 1 team member from each team will be allowed in the water at any one time.

b) Each surfer must commence from the allocated beach or water start line as nominated by the Contest Director.

c) The team order of surfing cannot be changed once submitted at ‘check in time’. The power surfer must also be nominated. The Contest Director will nominate the Team composition criteria.

d) Each surfer can catch a maximum of 3 waves.

e) The surfer must nominate/claim 2 of those waves by raising both their hands above their head before making an attempt/ motion to paddle out again or, if the surfer has completed their 3rd wave before the surfer enters the team zone / box.

f) Once the wave is nominated cannot be changed and therefore counts as a scoring wave. If a surfer fails to nominate any waves, the surfer will not be scored & zero points will be allocated for that wave/s.

g) When a surfer has nominated 2 waves they must return to the shore and make contact with the beach marker or ‘team zone/box’ located in a designated area on the beach, thus releasing the next team surfer.

h) Each team will have a power surfer. The power surfer will have all their 3 rides counting in the team score. The power surfer does not have to nominate their waves as every ride will count in the team total.

i) Team surfers must make contact with the beach marker to release the next team surfer. The next surfer must stay behind the start line or allocated buoy/paddle from point until this time.

j) Heat times will be at the discretion of the Contest Director.

k) The Contest Director designates the start line and beach/water marker.

l) Final results are achieved by adding total scores together.

m) drop in penalties.
When a riding interference has been scored the interfering surfer is penalized by that wave being scored as a zero.
The surfer who has been interfered with will receive a wave over the 3 wave maximum. If the surfer elects the extra wave they must nominate/claim as one of the waves.

Meeting started 7pm

Present: Jono Pascoe, Jimmy Crooks, Leroy Rust, Nathan Lungley, Andy Sutherland, Jeff Munroe, Jayin Tzu, Chris Lamb,Hayley Coakes.

· It was discussed and agreed that membership would be $10 for students, $20 for Adults and $40 for Families.

· Leroy suggested that the club contact the Otago Scholastics committee with regard to members participating the Otago Scholastics schedule for the upcoming season 08-09.

· With regard to contest running a sponsor is sought for sponsorship/supply of competition rashies.

· The members decided to contact Lake Hawea and South Coast Boardriders with regard to interclub competitions, Otago Champs and a general ‘hello’.

· As part of membership it was decide to approach some Dunedin retailers for a loyalty card.

· SISA membership was reported as $112 per year. It was decided that the club would SISA affiliated for the upcoming 2008-9 season.

· It was reported that a judging course run by SISA in July was available. Jimmy, Nathan, Leroy and Andy expressed interest in doing this course.

· It was jointly decided that the financial year should coincide with the June Solstice.

· It was decided the current committee would run until the 2008 September AGM, where a full committee would be elected by current members.

· All present discussed and eventually elected a 5 person temporary committee featuring

A club constitution is currently being worked on, and will be posted on the blog before the next meeting for comment and input.

Members also decided they also wanted to have strong community participation by helping families be introduced to surfing and participating in active environmental acts and issues as well as local and central government issues.

It was also decided to have fun contests along the lines of tag team, deciding the comps on the day, like: ugly board comps, full moon surfing, single fin.

Members were asked to submit designs for letterheads, stickers, t-shirt and hoody designs for the new logo, as the previous ones could not be tracked down. Flags to be organised by Jay and a car horn by Jono.

It was decided that communication within the club and its members was paramount, which would be achieved through both the blog (www.bigrock-boardriders.blogspot.com ) of which members are encouraged to contribute to, and an 027 cell phone dedicated to the club.

Mr Munroe would be happy to be liaise between the Big Rock Boardriders and the Brighton Surf Life Saving club.

There will be a voting in of the committee and drawing up a constitution, setting membership fees and discussing winter plans and club direction.

We're going to do our best to represent the surf community in Otago.

So whether your a Ripper, Beginner or a Lady or a oldschool cruiser, from the North coast or the South coast your welcome to hang out and meet the crew.

We want to include as many people as we can so membership prices will be realistic here again you get your say! so email us and let us know!

In time we'll get some bumper stickers and designs together for your hoodie or t shirt so you can style.
